Today, Wuxi Rihuan Sensing Technology Co., Ltd. will introduce to you the sensitivity of color mark sensors: it is not the higher the better.

In automated scenarios such as packaging, printing, and label inspection, color mark sensorsare used to identify specific color markings (such as the positioning color blocks on the packaging film). Many users have a misunderstanding: they believe that the higher the sensitivity setting, the more reliable the detection. As a result, they keep turning up the sensitivity knob, but the outcome is the opposite - the equipment frequently gives false alarms, outputs jump randomly, and even the entire machine fails to work properly.

The sensitivity is too high. Why does it then give false alarms?

The core task of the color sensor is not "detecting the color", but distinguishing the color mark from the background. When the sensitivity is too high, the comparison threshold inside the sensor is set too low, which means:

Even tiny dirt spots, oil stains, textures, and slight color differences on the background material can be wrongly identified by the sensor as "color marks".

An area that was not supposed to trigger produced an output signal, causing the equipment to malfunction continuously.

This is not a fault of the sensor, but rather a result of improper parameter settings.

The correct approach: Use the point at which the two can be clearly distinguished as the benchmark.

The standard debugging method is as follows:

Align the sensor with the color mark and adjust the sensitivity so that the sensor outputs a stable signal (or the indicator light is on).

Then align the sensor with the background and adjust the sensitivity so that the sensor does not output anything (or the indicator light goes out).

Based on the aforementioned critical point, make a slight adjustment backward to retain some margin, in order to overcome the effects caused by material jitter or minor contamination.

If manual adjustment is difficult, it is more recommended to use the automatic learning function that comes standard with the modern color sensor:

Press the learning key once when aligning with the color mark.

Press the learning button once to align with the background.

The sensor automatically calculates the optimal discrimination threshold, eliminating the need for manual repeated trials.

Summary

Over-adjusting the sensitivity High false alarms, equipment malfunction Based on the stable distinction between the color mark and the background, leave a margin or use Teach-in

Sensitivity is not the higher the better; it should be just right for reliability.
