Capacitive proximity switches and inductive proximity switches are two common non-contact detection components used in industrial automation. Their working principles and applicable objects are different.

The inductive proximity switch generates an alternating electromagnetic field inside. When a conductive object (such as metal) enters the magnetic field area, an eddy current is generated inside the object. This eddy current acts back on the switch, causing changes in the internal parameters and thereby controlling the on-off state of the switch. It can only detect metal conductors.
The sensing surface of a capacitive proximity switch is equivalent to one of the plates of a capacitor, and the other plate is the switch housing. When any object approaches, regardless of whether it is a conductor or not, it will change the dielectric constant, causing a change in capacitance, thereby controlling the switch operation. Therefore, it can detect various materials such as metals, plastics, liquids, and woods.
Inductive type: Suitable for detecting metal objects, such as gears, cams, iron blocks, etc.
Capacitive type: Suitable for non-metallic objects, liquids, granular materials, etc. It can also be used for liquid level or material level control.
Inductive sensors are commonly used in limit switches, speed monitoring, counting, etc.
Capacitive sensors are commonly used in liquid level alarms, plastic part inspections, and control of grain or powder levels.
The key factor in choosing which proximity switch to use lies in whether the object being measured is a metallic conductor. If it is metallic, an inductive type will suffice; if it is necessary to detect non-metallic or liquid objects, a capacitive type should be selected.
